Automated Essay Scoring With E-rater v.2.0 Yigal Attali and Jill Burstein ETS, Princeton, NJ November 2005Automated essay scoring is one of the most controversial applications of “big data” in edtech research. Writing is a deeply creative, emotive and personal endeavor.
As part of that contest, responses to 8 different essay questions written by students in grades 6-10 were provided. The responses were scored by humans and given a holistic score indicating the English proficiency of the student. The goal of the contest was to build an automated scoring model with the highest accuracy on held-out evaluation data.
Automated essay scoring (AES) is the use of specialized computer programs to assign grades to essays written in an educational setting. It is a method of educational assessment and an application of natural language processing. Its objective is to classify a large set of textual entities into a small number of discrete categories, corresponding to the possible grades—for example, the numbers.
